3D printing is a form of additive manufacturing, a technology in which three-dimensional objects are created by building up successive physical layers. Compared to other additive manufacturing technologies, 3D printers offer advantages such as speed, affordability, and ease of use. Let’s discuss the three main advantages of 3D printers.
Advantage 1: Manufacturing complex objects does not increase costs. In traditional manufacturing, the more complex an object’s shape, the higher the manufacturing cost. For 3D printers, manufacturing complex objects does not require more time, skill, or cost than printing a simple cube. The ability to produce complex items without increasing costs disrupts traditional pricing models and changes the way we calculate manufacturing costs.
Advantage 2: Product diversity does not increase costs. A 3D printer can produce a wide variety of shapes, creating different items each time, much like a craftsman. Traditional manufacturing equipment has limited functionality and can produce only a limited range of shapes. 3D printing eliminates the costs of training technicians or purchasing specialized equipment; a 3D printer requires only digital design blueprints and a batch of new raw materials.

Advantage 3: No assembly required. 3D printing enables parts to be formed as a single, integrated unit. Traditional mass production relies on assembly lines; in modern factories, machines produce identical components, which are then assembled by robots or workers. The more components a product has, the more time and cost are consumed by assembly. Through layer-by-layer manufacturing, a 3D printer can simultaneously print a door and its matching hinges, eliminating the need for assembly. Eliminating assembly shortens the supply chain and reduces labor and transportation costs. The shorter the supply chain, the less pollution is generated.
